Once a sow has farrowed, ad-lib feeding means she can feed herself and nurse her litter as and when she wishes, leading to improved growth rates. Our Ad-Lib Feeder has a capacity of 240lb, allowing longer gaps between filling, reducing time and labour costs. This feeder is best suited to systems where you’re aiming to wean pigs in around 28 days.
Reducing waste is vital in outdoor pig production, as feed is your biggest single cost. Our Daily Feeder allows you to feed a specific ration, tailored to the sow’s condition, while preventing losses to trampling and vermin. We recommend this feeder for systems working to longer weaning times, of between four and seven weeks.
Filling is via a perforated panel in the back of the feeder; a lid helps to keep the feed as dry as possible. The Daily Feeder is built on a durbar plinth for maximum stability and comfort for the sows.
A simple, lower-cost alternative to our Daily Feeder, the Trough Feeder keeps feed off the ground and out of the reach of vermin. A hinged lid helps to keep the feed dry. Like the Daily Feeder, the Trough Feeder is designed for daily feeding based on sow condition, and is best suited to systems weaning at seven weeks.
The New Ration Feeder
A development of our HDG Ad-Lib Feeder, the Ration Feeder has a unique mechanism that dispenses feed in equal, regulated quantities. This allows the pigperson to control sows’ intake in the two days before and seven days after farrowing, and spend more time concentrating on this important production stage. The mechanism easily reverts to ad-lib feeding once this controlled feeding stage is complete.
Like the Standard Ad Lib Feeder, the Ration Feeder has a 240lb hopper, so typically requires refilling only once every 10 days or so. This means daily paddock rounds can be made on foot, making better use of skilled staff time: cutting tractor-and-feeder traffic also reduces soil compaction in alleyways. The mechanism, which we’ve designed, engineered and manufactured entirely in-house, is made from stainless steel. It’s simple, robust and effectively maintenance-free: it can be removed for inspection or cleaning by simply undoing two bolts.
